Dialed number identification service

A telephone service that identifies the number that the caller dialed for the receiver of the call. DNIS is a common feature of 800 and 900 services, and can identify the number originally dialed when multiple 800 or 900 numbers terminate on the same destination trunks. DNIS works by passing the dialed number to the destination device, which can act upon this data to control its routing, queuing, IVR, or other call behavior. DNIS is typically used to separate call treatment for different inbound campaigns or help desk numbers, whether in one enterprise or at a service bureau. Dialed Number Identification Service (DNIS) is a telephony network service that allows the called party to identify which number the calling party dialed. This functionality is beneficial only if the called party can be reached by multiple phone numbers, as is typical for calls routed through a private branch exchange. This service, sold by the phone company that manages the local phone system, is particularly valuable to corporations that operate a number of toll free numbers. The operator, using DNIS, will be able to identify which number the customer called and route the call to the appropriate destination. In this role, DNIS may be considered the inverse of caller ID.
